中国の中部、甘粛省から四川省、雲南省に分布しています。標高１６００〜３０００メートルの山地の潅木帯に生え、高さは５メートル以上になります。幹には強い棘があり、葉は奇数羽状複葉で卵形の小葉が７〜１１個つきます。６月から７月ごろ、芳香のあるピンク色の花を咲かせます。果実はボトル形で朱色に熟します。種小名は、発見したフランス人宣教師のアルマン・ダビッド神父（Armand David）に因みます。中国語では「西北薔薇（xi bei qiang wei）」と呼ばれます。

The Rosa davidii belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a deciduous small tree that is native to central China, from Gansu south to Sichuan, Yunnan. This tree grows in mountain scrubs 1600-3000 m elevation and can reach up to 5 m in height. The stems have strong prickles and the leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 7-11 ovate leaflets. The scented pink flowers come in June to July. The fruits are bottle-shaped and ripen in scarlet. The specific epithet is named in honor of French missionary Père Armand David. It is called "西北薔薇" (xi bei qiang wei) in Chinese.
