ブラジルからウルグアイ、アルゼンチンに分布しています。わが国へは江戸時代に琉球から渡来しました。高さは１〜２メートルになり、地下茎で増えます。葉は「やなぎ」に似た長披針形で白っぽい青緑色をしています。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先に散房花序をつけ、紫色の花を咲かせます。別名で「りゅうきゅうやなぎ（琉球柳）」とも呼ばれます。

ナス科ナス属の常緑低木で、学名は Solanum glaucophyllum。英名は Waxyleaf nightshade。

The Waxyleaf nightshade (Solanum glaucophyllum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Brazil to Uruguay and Argentina. It was introduced into Japan via Ryukyu in the Edo Era (1603-1868). The plant grows up to a height of 1-2 m and spreads by underground roots. The leaves are willow-like, long-lanceolate and whitish blue-green. It produced corymbs at the terminal branches and bloom purple flowers from July to September.
