The Calanthe discolor belongs to the Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is disrtibuted southward from west-southern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan and Jeju-do in southern Korea. This herb grows in forests and can reach 30-50 cm in height. It is a most popular species in Calanthe genus. The flowering stalk is borne and the brownish purple, rarely pale green flowers bloom from April to May. Also known as "Ebine". The Japanese name comes from the fact that the shape of the pseudobulbs lined up is likened to a shrimp.
