わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに南千島やサハリン南部に分布しています。山地の水湿地などに生え、高さは30〜70センチになります。よく群生します。6月から7月ごろ、紫黒色の雄性の頂小穂と雌性の側小穂をだします。赤褐色の花柱が果期まで残ります。
カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex sadoensis。英名はありません。
"Sado-suge" (Carex sadoensis) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido, also the southern Kuril Islands and southern Sakhalin. Thisherb grows in mountain marshes and water's edges, and can reach 30-70 cm in height. It often forms a clump. The purplish black male acrogyrous spikes and female pleurogerous spikes are borne from June to July. The reddish brown pistiles remain through fruit season.
