"Sawa-fuji-bakama" (Eupatorium x arakianum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is a cultivated hybrid between "Sawa-hiyodori" (Eupatorium lindleyanum var. lindleyanum) and "Fuji-bakama" (Eupatorium japonicum). It escaped from cultivation and nowaday it often grows in dry riverbeds. This herb can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The stems are tinged reddish and the all leaves are divided into trilobate and not having petioles. The magenta flowers bloom in corymbs atop of stems from August to October. Mostly species of commercial "Fuji-bakama" are "Sawa-fuji-bakama".
