The "Sakishima-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron amanoi) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Kumejima in the Okinawa Islands to Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima in the Yaeyama Islands. It grows on cliffs along mountain streams in sunny areas and reaches a height of 30 to 200 cm. The leaves are elliptical, thick, and somewhat leathery, with slightly pointed tips. The upper surface of the leaves is covered with stiff hairs, giving them a rough texture to the touch. From March to June, it produces inflorescences at the tips of its branches, bearing 1 to 3 flowers. The corolla is red with dark spots on the inner surface. It is also known by the common name "Kumejima-tsutsuji".
