The Salween camellia (Camellia saluenensis) belongs to Teaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreenl tree that is distributed across central and southern China, from western Guizhou Province to southwestern Sichuan Province, and central and western Yunnan Province. It grows in mixed forests on mountain slopes and reaches a height of 1 to 4 m. It branches profusely and has a compact growth habit. The leaves are oblong to oblong-elliptic, stiff and leathery, with a dark green, glossy surface. From January to March, rose-colored, pink, or white flowers bloom in the upper leaf axils. The fruit is a capsule that is nearly spherical, about 2.5 cm in diameter, and three-chambered, with each chamber containing one to two seeds. It is called "怒江山茶" (nu jiang shan cha) in Chinese.
