わが国の本州、滋賀県から鳥取県にかけての日本海側に分布しています。「かんあおい」の変種です。山地の林下に生え、高さは10センチほどになります。葉は卵形から卵状楕円形で、基部は深い心形です。10月から3月ごろ、暗紫色の花を咲かせます。花に花弁はなく、萼裂片が花弁状になります。萼筒は鐘形筒状で、萼裂片は卵状三角形です。雌しべは6個、雄しべが12個あります。 
ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa nipponica var. saninense (syn. Asarum nipponicum var. saninense)。英名はありません。 
"Sanin-kan-aoi" (Heterotropa nipponica var. saninense) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed on the Sea of Japan coast from Shiga to Tottori prefectures in Honshu, Japan. It is a variant of "Kan-aoi". It grows under forests in mountainous areas and grows to a height of about 10 cm. It produces dark purple flowers from October to March. The flowers are petal-less, and the calyx lobes are petal-like. The calyx tube is bell-shaped tubular, and the calyx lobes are ovate-triangular. There are 6 pistils and 12 stamens.
