中国南部や台湾が原産です。高さは３〜５メートルになり、半着生して枝から気根をたくさん出します。葉は掌状複葉で、楕円形の小葉が７〜１２個つきます。観葉植物として栽培され、ふつうには「カポック」と呼ばれています。和名では、「やどりふかのき（宿りふかの木）」ですが、「ふかのき（Schefflera octophylla）」に着生することに由来します。写真中５〜６・下は、切れ葉の斑入り品種。

ウコギ科フカノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Schefflera arboricola。英名は Dwarf schefflera。

The dwarf schefflera (Schefflera arboricola) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southern China and Taiwan. This tree can reach 3-5 m in height and has many aerial roots, semi-epiphytic. The leaves are palmate compounds with 7-12 elliptic leaflets. It is cultivated as an ornamental leafy plant. The 6th to bottom in the photos, are incised and variegated leaf varieties.
