ヨーロッパの東南部から西アジアに分布しています。いまでは、庭木や生垣に広く植栽されています。葉は革質でやや厚く、光沢があります。また葉には青酸配糖体が含まれ、ラウロセラズス水という鎮咳薬が作られます。４月から５月ごろ、ブラシ状の花序に白い花を咲かせます。名前は、樹皮が身ぐるみ剥がれたように剥離することから。写真中３〜中５は、園芸品種の「マウントバーノン（cv. Mount Vernon）」。

バラ科サクラ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Prunus laurocerasus。英名は Cherry laurel。

The Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to south-eastern Europe and West Asia. Nowadays, it is planted widely as garden trees and headges. The leaves are leathery, thickish and glossy. They contain cyanogenetic glycoside and the Cherry-laurel water is produced by water distillation of them. The white flowers bloom in the brush-like clusters from April to May. The barks are peeled overall.
