わが国の本州、東北地方から関東地方に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。茎はあまり分枝せず、翼が発達します。葉は卵形から長卵形で、疎らに軟毛があり、葉柄には狭い翼があります。９月から１０月ごろ、淡紫紅色の頭花を咲かせます。総苞は広筒形です。

キク科トウヒレン属の多年草で、学名は Saussurea nipponica ssp. sendaica (syn. Saussurea sendaica)。英名はありません。

"Sendai-touhiren" (Saussurea nipponica ssp. sendaica) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Tohoku and Kanto district of Honshu in Japan, and it can reach 50-100 cm in height. The stems are a few branched and develop wings. The leaves are ovate to long-ovate, sparse pubescent and petiolate with narrow wings. The pale magenta flower-heads bloom from September to October. The bracts are broad cylindric.
