メキシコの東部に分布しています。幹の基部は肥大し、高さは９メートルほどになります。冬の終わりの２月ごろ、葉が展開する前に花を咲かせます。シェービングブラシのような濃いピンク色の雄しべが目立ちます。葉ははじめ鮮やかな赤色をしていますが、大きくなると緑色に変わります。写真上から中５は、雄しべが白い品種の「アルブム（cv. Album）」または「アルバ（var. alba）」。

パンヤ科プセウドボンバックス属の落葉高木で、学名は Pseudobombax ellipticum。英名は Shaving brush tree。

Shaving brush tree (Pseudobombax ellipticum) belongs to the Bombacaceae family. It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to eastern Mexico. The trunk is swollen at the base and can reach about 9 m in height. The flowers come in February before foliation. They have distinct, shaving brush like, deep pink stamens. The leaves are bright red at first and turn green when mature. The top to 6th photos are a cultivar 'Album' or 'Alba' with white stamens.
