わが国の北海道西南部から本州、四国、九州に分布しています。山地の林や笹原に生える腐生植物です。茎は直立して１０〜３０センチほどになり、葉は退化して鱗片状です。７月から８月ごろ、淡い紅色の花を咲かせます。唇弁は袋状で真ん中に黄色い突起があります。和名は、兜をつけた鍾馗さまの姿に見立てたもの。

ラン科ショウキラン属の多年草で、学名は Yoania japonica。英名はありません。

"Shouki-ran" (Yoania japonica) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. It is a saprophytic plant that grows in mountain forests and fields of bamboo grass. The stems are upright and about 10 to 30 cm long, and the leaves are degenerated and scaly. The pale crimson flowers come in July to August. The labellum is bag-shaped with a yellow protrusion in the middle. The Japanese name resembles the appearance of "Zhong Kui" (a deity in Chinese mythology) wearing a helmet.
