The "Shirahato-tsubaki" (Camellia fraterna) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed to central-eastern China. It grows in forests and shrublands at elevations of 300 to 1100 m and reaches a height of 1 to 4 m. The leaves are elliptical to oblong, thin and leathery, with a dark green, glossy surface. From around February to March, it produces white or pale pink flowers in the leaf axils. The corolla is 2.5-4 cm in diameter and has 5-6 petals. The fruit is a spherical capsule containing a single seed per locule. In Chinese, it is called "毛花連蕊茶" (mao hua lian rui cha).
