Dioon edule

メキシコの東部沿岸、ベラクルス州からヌエボ・レオン州が原産です。熱帯の落葉樹林やオークの林、岩場、急峻な崖などに生えます。成長は遅く、高さは4メートル、直径30センチほどの木の幹になります。外観はややヤシに似ていて、茎の上部には50〜150個の葉が樹冠となり、葉の長さは1〜2メートルです。 
ソテツ科サゴソテツ属の常緑低木で、学名は Dioon edule。英名は Chamal。 
The chamal (Dioon edule) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to the eastern coast of Mexico; from Veracruz to the Nuevo Leon. This tree grows in tropical deciduous forest and oak woodland, in rocky areas and on steep cliffs. It is slow-growing, and can reach a height of 4 m with a bole 30 cm in diameter. It has a somewhat palm-like appearance, the stem is topped by a crown of 50-150 leaves that can be 1-2 m long.
