アメリカの中南部からメキシコ北・中部に分布しています。石灰岩地に生え、高さは15〜45センチになります。ほとんどの葉は基部に叢生します。葉は倒披針形で、縁は、全縁や鋸歯があるもの、羽状に分裂するものと多様です。3月から6月ごろ、直径2〜3センチの黄色い頭花を裂かせます。頭花の真ん中に、まき散らかしたような黒色から濃紫色の葯筒があるのが特徴です。
キク科ピロパップス属の一年草で、学名は Pyrrhopappus multicaulis。英名は Texas dandelion。
The Texas dandelion (Pyrrhopappus multicaulis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to the cental-southern United States and northern and central Mexico. This herb grows on calcareous soils and can reach 15-45 cm in height. Most of its leaves are crowded at the base. They are oblanceolate and varied margines, eitire, toothed or pinnately lobed. The yellow heads are 2-3 cm in diameter and borne in March to June. Texas dandelion is defined by the black to dark purple anther tubes scattered across the center of the heads.
