わが国の北海道から東北アジアに分布しています。海岸の草原や岩礫地に生え、高さは１０〜４０センチなります。茎は４稜があり、葉は狭い三角状で対生します。８月から９月ごろ、淡い青紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠は４裂し、濃い紫色の斑紋があります。裂片には楕円形の腺溝があり、まわりに毛が密に列生しています。中国語では「卵葉獐牙菜（luan ye zhang ya cai）」と呼ばれます。

リンドウ科センブリ属の多年草で、学名は Swertia tetrapetala。英名はありません。

The "Chishima-senburi" (Swertia tetrapetala) belongs to Gentianaceae (the Gentian family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Hokkaido of Japan and North East Asia. This herb grows in coastal grasslands or screes, and can reach 10-40 cm in height. The stem is quadrangular. The leaves are narrow deltoid and arranged in opposite. The pale blueish purple flowers bloom in August to September. The corolla is four-lobate with dark purple mottles. The lobe has elliptic glandular vallecula that is surrounded by dense hairs. It is called "卵葉獐牙菜" (luan ye zhang ya cai) in Chinese.
