わが国の固有種で、本州の中部地方以北に分布しています。山地の湿地に生え、高さは15メートルほどになります。樹皮は暗灰色で、縦に割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で対生し、広卵形から長楕円形の小葉が2〜3対つきます。雌雄異株で、4月から5月ごろ、葉の展開と同時に枝先や葉腋に円錐花序をだし、花弁のない花を咲かせます。田の畔に、刈りとった「いね」を干す稲架木(はざき)として植栽されます。
モクセイ科トネリコ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fraxinus japonica。英名はありません。
"Toneriko" (Fraxinus japonica) belongs to the Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is endemic of Japan and distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu. This tree grows in waste places of mointains and can reach about 15 m in height. Tha barks are dark gray and furrowed longitudially. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound and opposite with 2-3 pairs of broad-ovate to oblong leaflets. It is dioecious. The panicles are borne at terminal branchlets or axiles and bloom apetalous flowers form April to May, as soon as foliation. This tree is planted for "Haza" (Paddy-sheaf-rack) in rice field linches.
