メキシコが原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の後期に渡来しました。塊茎があり、夏に花茎を伸ばして「すいせん（水仙）」に似た乳白色の花を咲かせます。花には芳香があり、とくに夜になると強くなります。昔、アステカの人々は、この香油をチョコレートのフレーバーに使ったそうです。別名で「げっかこう（月下香）」とも呼ばれます。

The Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Mexico. It was introduced into Japan in the latter term of Edo Era (1603-1868). It has caudices. The flowering stalks are borne, and the daffodil-like milky-white flowers bloom in summer. The flowers are scented, and the aroma gets up in night. The perfume oil was used as a flavor of chocolate in the days of Aztec.
