わが国の本州、東北地方南部から四国、九州に分布しています。「つが（栂）」や「もみ（樅）」などに半寄生して、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は卵形から長卵形で先が長く尖り、対生します。雌雄異株です。５月から６月ごろ、雄花は散房状に、雌花は枝先に１個つきます。雌花の子房の先端には、細長い葉状の苞が４個つきます。果実は卵円形で、花後に大きくなった苞が残り、追い羽根に似ています。

ビャクダン科ツクバネ属の落葉低木で、学名は Buckleya lanceolata (syn. Buckleya lanceolata f. subtriflora)。英名はありません。

The "Tsukubane" (Buckleya lanceolata) belongs to Santalaceae (the Sandalwood family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from southern Tohoku region of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree is hemi-parasitic to Southern Japanese hemlock (Tsuga sieboldii) and Japanese fir (Abies firma), and grows up to a height of 1-2 m. The leaves are ovate to long-ovate with acute tips and arranged in oppositely. It is dioecious. Male flowers bloom in corymbs-likes and one female flower blooms at terminal branches. Four elongated leafy bracts are attached to the tip of the ovary of the female flower. The fruits are ovate-round-shaped, with the bracts growing large after the flowers, similar to the shuttlecock.
