The "Tsukushi-mamushi-gusa" (Arisaema maximowiczii) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout central and northern Kyushu in Japan. It grows under the canopy of mountainous forests and reaches a height of 30 to 60 m. The leaves are palmately compound, bearing 7 to 11 leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate to narrowly ovate or oblong, with entire or serrated margins. From around April to June, it produces flowers in a spadix enclosed by a spathe at the stem apex. The spathe is green or purplish-brown and is characterized by its tail-like extension at the tip of the flanks. The appendages are slender, rod-shaped with short stalks, and the upper part curves slightly forward. The fruit ripens to a deep red color from September to October.
