"Tsuru-yoshi" (Phragmites japonica) belongs to the Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China and eastern Siberia. This herb grows mainly sandy places in upper to middle reaches, and can reach 1.5-2 m in height. It spreads by long stolons on the grounds. The leaves are linear, 20-30 cm long and the sheaths are tinged purple. The panicle is borne and bloom pale purplish-brown spikelets from August to October.
