The Cotton (Gossypium arboreum var. indicum) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is an annual or a perennial herb that is native to India, Central and South America. Some species of cotton have been cultivated in many places individually. Bharata already began to weave cotton in 1900 B.C. It was introduced into Japan in the early Heian Period (about 1200 years ago). This herb is a perennial in the tropical areas, though it is an annual in the temperate areas. The pale yellow flowers are borne on the axils from August to October. The five petals are spirally-arrangement with dark red bases. The seeds and fluffs are used for cotton cloth, cottonseed oil and cottonseed meal.
