わが国の本州、宮城県以南から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地の明るい林内に生え、高さは２〜３メートルになります。茎や葉、花序などに星状毛が多いのが特徴です。広卵形または卵状楕円形の葉は薄い洋紙質で対生します。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋に短い集散花序をだして、淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。秋に果実は紫色に熟します。「むらさきしきぶ」とは、星状毛が多く、花序がやや下向きにつくことで区別できます。

クマツヅラ科ムラサキシキブ属の落葉低木で、学名は Callicarpa mollis。英名はありません。

"Yabu-murasaki" (Callicarpa mollis) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Miyagi prefecture to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in open forests of mountains and can reach 2-3 m in height. It is defined by numerous stellate hairs on stems, leaves and inflorescenses. The leaves are broad ovate to ovate-elliptic, thin foreign paper quality and opposite. The short cymes are borne in axiles and bloom pale purple flowers from June to July. The fruits ripen purple in fall. It is diferrent from the "Japanese beautyberry" (Callicarpa japonica) in that has numerous stellate hairs and downward inflorescenses.
