The "Yaeyama-raseita-so" (Boehmeria yaeyamensis) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to the Yaeyama Islands, Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, and Yonaguni Island in Japan. It grows on sunny shores and is 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-round with serrated edges, dense rough hairs undersides and grow in pairs. It is dioecious. From March to May, female plants produce panicles 3 to 10 cm long in the leaf axils near the stem apex, while male plants produce male inflorescences 10 to 20 cm long in the leaf axils slightly lower down. The flowers are small, green and densely packed. It is classified as Near Threatened (NT) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
