わが国の固有種で、各地に分布しています。「どろのき」に似ていますが、主に乾燥したところに生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。葉は広楕円形で裏面は灰白色をしています。葉柄が長く、風が吹くと大きく揺れて葉鳴りします。３月ごろ、５〜１０センチほどの花序を下垂させ、花を咲かせます。雌雄異株です。別名で「はこやなぎ（箱柳）」とも呼ばれますが、この材で箱が作られたことによります。 |

ヤナギ科ヤマナラシ属の落葉高木で、学名は Populus sieboldii。英名はありません。 |

The "Yama-narashi" (Populus sieboldii) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is an endemic species and distributed throughout Japan. This tree resembles to the Japanese poplar (Populus suaveolens), and grows mainly in arid places and up to a height of about 20 m. The leaves are broad elliptic and grayish white beneath. They have long petioles, sway greatly and rustle when the wind blows. The clusters, around 5-10 cm are descending and flowers will bloom around March. It is dioecious. It is also called "Hakoyagi" in another name, but it depends on the box being made of this material. |
