南アメリカのブラジル南部からウルグアイ、アルゼンチンに分布しています。「ブラジルやし」に近縁で、高さは１０〜１２メートルになります。葉は羽状複葉で、長さは１．８メートルほどです。小葉は青緑色で、縁には細かい棘状の鋸歯があります。果実は球形の液果で橙色に熟し、食用になります。氷点下９℃くらいの耐寒性があり、わが国でも屋外に植栽されます。

ヤシ科ブラジルヤシ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Butia yatay。英名は Yatay palm、Yatay。

The Yatay palm (Butia yatay) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to South America, from southern Brazil to Uruguay and Argentina. This tree is closely related to Jelly palm and can reach 10-12 m in height. The leaves are pinnate and about 1.8 m long. The leaflets are bluish-green with fine spiny toothed edges. The fruits are round berries, ripen in orange and edible. It is cold tolerant to about -9 degree centigrade and is planted outdoors in our country.
