 わが国の奄美大島から沖縄、それに台湾や太平洋諸島に広く分布
しています。高さは３〜６メートルになり、太い気根を出します。葉は
線状披針形でかたい革質、葉の縁と裏面主脈上に棘があります。
夏、枝先の肉穂花序に花を咲かせます。果実は黄赤色に熟し、食べ
ることができます。「ヤシガニ」の好物とのことです。
タコノキ科タコノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Pandanus
odoratissimus。英名は Screw pine。
Screw pine belongs to Pandanaceae (the Screwpine family). It is an
evergreen semi-tall tree that is distributed widely from the Amami, the
Okinawa Islands of Japan south to Taiwan and the Pacific Islands. This
tree can reach 3-6 m in height, and has also thick aerial roots. Leaves are
linear-lanceolate, hard leathery with spines on the edges and backside
veines. Small flowers on the terminal spadix come in summer. Fruits ripen
yellow-red and edible. Coconut crabs have a good stomack for these
fruits.
