わが国の本州から四国・九州それに東アジアに広く分布しています。山地や野原に生え、高さは20〜80センチになります。茎には4稜があり、長い柄のある葉は3出葉または1〜2回羽状複葉で対生します。7月から11月ごろ、分枝した茎の先端に、青紫色の唇形花を段状に輪生して咲かせます。花冠の上唇はやや直立し、下唇は3裂しています。神奈川県から東海・近畿地方に分布する「なつのたむらそう」に似ていますが、「なつのたむらそう」の雄蘂が花冠の中央にき出るのに対して、本種ははじめ花冠の上唇に沿って斜上し、のちに下方に屈曲します。
シソ科アキギリ属の多年草で、学名は Salvia japonica。英名はありません。
"Akino-tamura-so" (Salvia japonica) belongs to Labiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan and eastern Asia. This herb grows in fields and mountains, and can reach 20-80 cm in height. The stem is quadrangular. The leaves are trilobate or bipinnate to tripinnate compound and opposite with long petioles. The annular and tiers inflorescences are borne on the branched stems and the bluish-purple labiate flowers bloom from July to November. The upper lip is erectish and the lower lip is trilobate. The stamens are scendent along upper lip and inflective downward at the tips.
