 
 東アジアの亜熱帯から熱帯地方に分布しています。わが国では、本
州の伊豆半島や紀伊半島、四国や九州の海岸沿いに見られます。
高さは１５メートルほどになり、樹皮は滑らかで緑色をしています。大
型の葉は浅く掌状に３〜５裂し、枝先近くに互生します。６月から７月
ごろ、大きな円錐花序をつけ、小さな黄白色の花を咲かせます。果
実は莢果で、枝から下垂します。名前は、葉が「きり（桐）」に似てい
て、樹皮が緑色をしていることから。中国では「梧桐」と呼ばれます。
アオギリ科アオギリ属の落葉高木で、学名は Firmiana simplex。
英名は Chinese parasol tree。
Chinese parasol tree (Firmiana simplex) belongs to Sterculiaceae family. It
is a decidous tall tree that is native to sub-tropical or tropical area of East
Asia. This tree is distributed from Izu Penisula and Kii Penisula of Honshu
to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree occurs in coastal area and can reach
about 15 m in height. The bark is smooth and green. The leaves are large,
3-5 lobate shallowly and alternate at branching heads. The large panicles
are borne and bloom small yellow-white flowers from June to July. The
fruits are pods and drooping down from branches.
