 
 わが国の本州から四国・九州、それにアジア南部にかけて分布して
います。人里に多くに生えていることから、古くに繊維を採るために
栽培したものが野生化したと考えられています。名前は、茎（から）を
蒸し（むし）て皮をはいだことから。ふつうの「からむし」のように、葉
の裏に白い細毛が密生することなく、緑色のままです。７月から１０月
ごろ、淡緑色の目立たない花穂を形成します。
イラクサ科カラムシ属の多年草で、学名は Boehmeria nipononivea f.
concolor。英名はありません。
'Ao-kara-mushi' (Boehmeria nipononivea f. concolor) belongs to
Urticaceae (Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed widely
from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and southern Asia. This herb
occurs in wet places near town, and it is thought that escaped from the
caltivated areas in ancient days. The fiber was made from the stems. The
reverse side of leaves are glabrous and green. The inconspicuous pale
green flower-clusters come in July to October.
