 わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布してい
ます。山地の沢沿いや林縁に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになりま
す。葉は大きくて互生します。裏面には褐色の毛が生えています。６
月から７月ごろ、円錐花序をつけて、淡い黄白色の花を咲かせま
す。秋には果実が赤く熟します。名前は、燃やすと切り口から泡を吹
くことから。
アワブキ科アワブキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Meliosma myriantha。
英名はありません。
'Awa-buki' (Meliosma myriantha) belongs to Sabiaceae family. It is a
deciduous tall tree that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of
Japan, Korean Peninsula and China. This tree occurs along mountain
streams or woodland edges and can reach about 10 m in height. The leaves
are large elliptic and alternate. The reverse side of leaves are covered with
brownish hairs. The panicles are borne and bloom pale yellowish-white
flowers from June to July. The fruits ripen re in fall. The Japanese name
'Awa-buki (froth blowing - literally translated)' is derived from the
appearance that the timber frothes at the cut edge when putting on fire.
