 わが国の北海道南部から本州、四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中
国に分布しています。山地の林内や谷間、小川のほとりなどやや湿
ったところに生え、高さは７〜８メートルになります。葉は卵形で先端
が尖り、互生します。５月から６月ごろ、本年枝の先に白色の花を１
〜４個下垂して咲かせます。ほのかな優しい香りがあります。果皮に
はサボニンが含まれ、石けんの代わりにもなります。名前は、果皮に
えぐみがあることから。別名で「ちしゃのき」とも呼ばれます。
エゴノキ科エゴノキ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Styrax japonica。
英名は Japanese storax。
Japanese storax belongs to Styracaceae family. It is a deciduous semi-tall
tree that is distributed from southern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku,
Kyushu of Japan and Korean Peninsula, China. This tree occurs in waste
montane forests, dales or along streams and can reach 7-8 m in height. The
leaves are ovate with acute tips and opposite. The 1-4 drooping, white
flowers come on the terminal new branches from May to June. They have
delicate soft fragrance. The seedcases contain saponin and used as
substitute for soap.
