わが国の本州、東北地方北部から北海道、それに北半球の寒帯地域に広く分布しています。高山帯の雪田周辺や草地に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。葉は線形で密につき、縁には細かい鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、枝先に紅紫色または白色の花を咲かせます。花冠は壺形です。

ツツジ科ツガザクラ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Phyllodoce caerulea。英名は Blue heath、Blue mountain heath。

Blue heath (Phyllodoce caerulea) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from northern Tohoku district of Honshu to Hokkaido, as well as widely the frozen latitudes of Northern Hemisphere. This shrub grows along snow patches or in grasslands, and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The leaves are linear, densely-arranged with fine toothed edges. The magenta or white flowers bloom at the terminal branches from July to August. The corolla is urn-shaped.
