わが国の本州、岩手県以南の太平洋側から四国、九州それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。海岸の岩上や砂地に生え、高さは１５メートルほどになります。葉は鱗片葉と針葉の２形があります。鱗片葉は長さ１．５ミリほどの楕円形で十字対生します。また針葉は長さ５～１０ミリで、十字対生します。４月ごろ、小枝の先端に雄花と雌花を咲かせます。果実は球果で、翌年の１０月に黒紫色に熟します。別名で「びゃくしん（柏槙）」とも呼ばれます。

ヒノキ科ビャクシン属の常緑高木で、学名は Juniperus chinensis。
英名は Chinese juniper。

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tall that is distributed southward from Iwate prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows on the coastal rocks and sands, and can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are of two forms, needle-like leaves and scale-leaves. The scale-leaves are elliptic about 1.5 mm long and decussate. The needle-like leaves are 5-10 mm long and decussate. The male and female flowers bloom in the terminal twigs in April. The fruits are strobiles and ripen in blackihs-purple in next year's October.
