 中国原産です。わが国へは古い時代に渡来し、社寺の境内や街路
樹として広く植栽されています。高さは４５メートルにもなるそうです。
雌雄異株で、４月ごろに花が咲きます。果実は９月ごろ成熟し、外種
皮は黄色く悪臭があります。白くて硬い内種皮が「ぎんなん」です。秋
には黄葉します。写真下は、秋田県の天然記念物で「権現の大銀
杏」。
イチョウ科イチョウ属の落葉高木で、学名は Ginkgo biloba。
英名は Maidenhair tree、Ginkgo。
Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba) belongs to the Ginkgoaceae. It is a tall
deciduous tree that is native to China. It was introduced into Japan in
ancient days, and it is widely cultivated in temples and shrines, as a
roadside tree. This tree can reach about 45 m in height. It is a dioecious.
The flowers bloom in April, and the fruits ripen in September. The outer
seed coat is yellow, and has an offensive odor. The inner seed coat is
white, hard and called "Ginkgo". The leaves turn yellow in fall.
