わが国の本州、東北地方から北海道に分布しています。高山帯の湿地や傾斜地に生え、高さは50〜100センチになります。葉は披針形で厚みがあり、縁は裏側に巻き込みます。6月から7月ごろ、枝先に散房花序をだし、白い花を咲かせます。名前は「磯(いそ)」ではなく、「蝦夷(えぞ)」から転訛したものといわれます。 
ツツジ科イソツツジ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum var. nipponicum。英名はありません。 
"Iso-tsutsuji" (Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum var. nipponicum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from Tohoku district of Honshu north to Hokkaido. This shrub grows in alpine marshes and slopes, and it can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, thick and incurved. The white flowers bloom in the colymbs atop of branches from June to July.
