わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国東北部、サハリンなどに分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の林縁や沢沿いなどの湿ったところに生え、高さは15〜60センチになります。「あかばな(赤花)」より広めの葉は対生します。7月から8月ごろ、茎の上部の葉腋に淡紅色あるいは白色の花を咲かせます。4弁花で、花冠の先は浅く切れ込んでいます。子房は細長く花柄のように見え、また雌しべの柱頭は球状です。

(1) 花の色が白色に近い。
(2) 柱頭が球状。
(3) 葉の基部が細くなり、短い葉柄がある。
アカバナ科アカバナ属の多年草で、学名は Epilobium cephalostigma。英名はありません。 
"Iwa-akabana" (Epilobium cephalostigma) belongs to the Onagraceae (the Evening primrose family). It is a perennial herb that is native to throughout Japan, the Korean Peninsula, east-northern China and the Sakhalin. This herb grows in montane to sub-alpine forest edges or on wet places along streams, and it can reach 15-60 cm in height. The leaves are ovate to ovate-elliptic and arranged in opposite. The pale rose pink or white flowers bloom at upper axils from July to August. The flower is four-petaled with slightly notched tips. The ovary is slender peduncle-like and the stigma is globe.
