 
 メキシコが原産です。わが国へは江戸時代に渡来しました。高さは１
メートルほどになり、よく分枝して心卵形の葉が対生します。７月から
１０月ごろ、真っ赤なトランペット形の花を咲かせます。夕方から咲き
だして翌朝の９時ごろには花を閉じるので、「ゆうげしょう（夕化粧）」
とも呼ばれます。名前は、花後にできる黒い種子をつぶすと白い粉
が出ることから。太い根があり、地上部が枯れても、つぎの春にはま
た芽が出てきます。
オシロイバナ科オシロイバナ属の多年草で、学名は Mirabilis jalapa。
英名は Marvel of Peru, Four o'clock。
Marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) belongs to Nyctaginaceae (Four-o-clock
family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Mexico. It was introduced
into Japan in Edo Period (about 270 years ago). This herb is much
branched and can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are cordate-ovate
and opposite. The red to magenta trumpet-shaped flowers come in July
through October. They are nocturnal and open from evening to next
morning. The plant has thick roots and the young shoots are borne in
spring.
