 わが国の本州、福井・岐阜県以北から北海道、国後島に分布してい
ます。山地に生え、高さは２５メートルほどになります。樹皮は黄褐色
または灰褐色で、横に紙状に剥がれ、横長のはっきりした皮目があ
ります。葉は広卵形または卵円形です。５月ごろに花が咲きますが、
やがて長円柱形の果穂となって垂れ下がります。
カバノキ科カバノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Betula maximowicziana。
英名は Monarch birch。
Monarch birch (Betula maximowicziana) belongs to Betulaceae (the Birch
family). It is a tall decidous tree that is northward from Fukui-Gufu
prefecture to Hokkaido and the Kunashir Island. This tree grows in
mountains and can reach about 25 m in height. The barks are yellowish-
brown to grayish-brown and furrowed into horizontally, papery flakes with
row of lenticles. The leaves are broad ovate to round ovate. The flowers
bloom in May, and produce drooping expanding columnar clusters.
