 
 わが国の各地をはじめ、世界の温帯地域に広く分布しています。低
地から高山帯の針葉樹林内や湿地などに生え、高さは５～２０セン
チになります。針状の葉は、乾燥すると茎に密着します。蒴には４稜
があり角張ります。京都の日本庭園などで、もっともよく利用される
「すぎごけ」です。
スギゴケ科スギゴケ類の蘚類で、学名は Polytrichum commune。
英名は Hair cap moss。
Hair cap moss (Polytrichum commune) belongs to Polytrichaceae family. It
is a perennial moss that is distributed to all over Japan and in worldwide
temperate areas. This moss grows in lowland to alpine coniferous forests or
bogs, and can reach 5-20 cm in height. The leaves are needle-like and
attached firmly to the stems in dry condition. The capsules are quadrangular
and angulated. This moss is generally used for Japanese garden in Kyoto.
