"Usagi-giku" (Arnica unalaschcensis var. tschonoskyi) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu districtof Honshu to Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands. This herb grows in alpine grasslands and screes, and can reach 15-25 cm in height. The basal leaves are oblanceolate and the cauline leaves are opposite. The stems and leaves are covered with soft hairs. The yellow flowers bloom atop of stems from June to September. The Japanese name is derived from the leaf shape which sprouting in the spring.
