 
 メキシコから熱帯アメリカが原産ですが、熱帯各地で広く栽培されて
います。名前は、沖縄での漢名「蕃石榴」の読み方、「ばんじろう（ば
んしるー）」から。果実は球形・卵形または洋なし型で、先端に萼が
つきます。「ばんじろう」は、昔からインディオによって「聖なる木」と
呼ばれ、皮膚病や火傷の治療に使われていました。この葉を煎じた
グァバ茶は、アレルギー疾患に効果があるそうです。
フトモモ科バンジロウ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Psidium guajava。
英名は Common guava。
Common guava (Psidium guajava) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle
family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native from Mexico to tropical
America. Nowadays, this tree is cultivated widely in the tropical areas. The
fruits are globose, ovate or pear-shaped with their calyces. Common guava
has been called "Sacred tree" by the indigenous peoples since early times
and used as a traditional medicine for skin diseases and burn injury. The
guava leaves have an effect on curing for allergy disease.
