エジプトが原産といわれます。わが国へも３〜４世紀ごろに、シルクロードを経て渡来しました。「末摘花（すえつむはな）」と呼ばれ、口紅や染料の原料として栽培されてきました。高さは８０〜１２０センチほどになり、葉は長楕円形から広披針形で鋭い鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、鮮黄色から紅黄色に変わる頭花を咲かせます。

キク科ベニバナ属の一年草または越年草で、学名は Carthamus tinctorius。英名は Safflower。

The safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or biennial herb that is probably native to Egypt. This herb was introduced into Japan in 3-4 century via the Silk Road. It has been cultivated as a raw material for lip rouge and dye. This herb can reach 80-120 cm in height. The leaves are oblong to broad lanceolate woth acute toothed edges. The bright yellow flowerheads come in July through August. They turn reddish-yellow when mature.
