 中国西北部が原産で、中国では百花の王といわれます。中国の国
花のひとつです。冷涼な気候を好み、高さは５０〜１８０センチになり
ます。花期は４月から５月ですが、初冬と春に２回咲く寒ボタンもあり
ます。花には一重と八重があり、紅色、紫紅色、ピンク色や白色など
多彩です。根は漢方薬として用いられ、牡丹皮と呼ばれます。
ボタン科ボタン属の落葉低木で、学名は Paeonia suffruticosa。
英名は Moutan, Botan, Tree peony。
Moutan (Paeonia suffruticosa) belongs to Paeoniaceae (the Peony family).
It is a deciduous small tree that is native to northern-western China. It is
called 'the King of flowers' in China and one of national flowers of China.
This tree prefers cool temperate and can reach 50-180 cm in height. The
flowers appear from April to May. They are single or double and have riot
of colors; rose-pink, magenta, pink or white. The root is used as a herbal
medicine.
