 中国の中南部や台湾が原産です。わが国へは、江戸時代中頃に渡
来しました。高さは２５〜６０メートルになります。樹皮は灰褐色をして
滑らかで、薄く剥離します。葉は掌状に３裂して、細かい鋸歯があり、
互生します。４月ごろに花をつけ、果実はイガに包まれています。黄
葉が美しく、街路樹や公園樹として植栽されています。別名で「たい
わんふう（台湾楓）」とも呼ばれます。
マンサク科フウ属の落葉高木で、学名は Liquidambar formosana。
英名は Formosan sweetgum。
Formosan sweetgum (Liquidambar formosana) belongs to the
Hamamelidaceae (the Witch hazel family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is
native to the cenral-southern China and Taiwan. It was introduced into
Japan in the middle days of Edo Period (about 250 years ago). This tree
can reach 25-60 m in height. The barks are grayish brown, smooth and
peel thinly. The leaves are trilobate palmately, fine serrated and arranged
oppositely. The flowers bloom around April and the fruits are burry. The
leaves turn bright yellow in fall and the tree is planted as a roadside tree or
a garden tree.
