 
 南アメリカの北東部が原産です。現在では、南アメリカのアマゾン流
域をはじめ、西アフリカやインド、東南アジアで新しい野菜として栽培
されています。高さは３０センチほどになり、葉はソフトで栄養価が高
く、「ほうれんそう」の代用品として利用されます。わが国へは明治時
代の中頃に導入されましたが、今ではあちこちで野生化しています。
夏から秋にかけて、昼過ぎから夕方まで、白色から淡いピンク色の
花を咲かせます。
スベリヒユ科ハゼラン属の一年草で、学名は Talinum triangulare。
英名は Potherb fameflower, Surinam purslane。
Potherb fameflower belongs to the Portulacaceae (the Purslane family). It is
an annual herb that is native to north-east South America. Now a days, It is
cultivated as a new vegetable in Amazonian watershed, West Africa, India
and Southeast Asia. It can reach about 30 cm in height. The leaves are
soft, rich in nutrients and used as substitute for spinach. This herb was
introduced into Japan in the middle of Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). It
is naturalized in so many places now. The white to pale pink flowers come
in summer through fall. They bloom from early afternoon to evening.
