 アメリカの中部、アイオワ州東部からルイジアナ州、テキサス州それ
にメキシコ北部に分布しています。氾濫原や谷間などの湿ったところ
に生え、高さは３０メートルほどになります。樹皮は淡褐色または灰
色で、不規則に割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、小葉は披
針形、１１〜１７個がつきます。早春、葉が展開する前に、細い尾状
の雄花序を下垂させ、枝先には雌花序をつけます。果実は３〜５セ
ンチの堅果で４稜があり、「ウォールナッツ」に似ていています。アメリ
カでは「ピーカンナッツ（Pecan nut）」と呼ばれ、食用として広く栽培さ
れています。
クルミ科ペカン属の落葉高木で、学名は Carya illinoensis。
英名は Pecan, Sweet pecan。
Pecan (Carya illinoensis) belongs to the Juglandaceae (the Walnut family).
It is a tall deciduous tree that is native from eastern Iowa to Lousiana,
Texas and northern Mexico. This tree grows on wet places in flood plains
or valleys, and can reach about 30 m in height. The barks are pale brown
or gray, and furrowed unevenly. The leaves are impari-pinnate with 11-17,
lanceolate leaflets. The narrow, caudal, male clusters are drooping down
and the female clusters are borne at the top branches in early spring before
foliation. The fruits are nuts with four ridges and resemble to walnut. They
are called pecan nut in United States and widely cultivated as fruit trees.
