ブラジルの南東部が原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。茎は長くて３０センチほどあり、長さ４５センチ以上の楕円形の葉がつきます。葉の表面は、濃い緑色で淡い黄緑色の斑が縞々に入ります。その模様がシマウマに似ていることから「ゼブラプラント」とも呼ばれます。

クズウコン科カラテア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Calathea zebrina (syn. Goeppertia zebrina)。英名は Zebra plant。

The Zebra plant (Calathea zebrina) belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen herb that is native to southeastern Brazil. It grows in tropical rainforests and can reach a height of about 1 m. It has a long, 30 cm stem with elliptic leaves more than 45 cm long. The surface of the leaves is dark green striped with pale yellow-green spots. It is also called "zebra plant" in Japan because its pattern resembles that of a zebra.
