 ヨーロッパから西アジアそれに北アフリカが原産です。草地や湿り気
のある林内に生え、高さは２０〜３０センチほどになります。鱗茎は卵
形で、春に披針形の葉をだしますが、６月ごろには休眠し、葉は枯死
します。９月から１０月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして「サフラン」に似た花を咲
かせます。全草にアルカロイドのコルヒチン（colchicine）やデメコルシ
ン（demecolcine）が含まれ有毒です。属名は、黒海沿岸にあったコル
キス（Colchis）から。和名では、「いぬサフラン（犬サフラン）」と呼ばれ
ます。
ユリ科イヌサフラン属の多年草で、学名は Colchicum autumnale。
英名は Autumn crocus, Meadow saffron。
Autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) belongs to the Liliaceae (the Lily
family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Europe to West Asia and
North Africa. This herb grows in grasslands or wettish forests, and can
reach 20-30 cm in height. The bulbs are ovate and bear the lanceolate
leaves in spring. The leaves blight and diapause in June. The flowering
stalks are borne and the saffron-like flowers bloom from September to
October. The whole plant contents toxic alkaloid, such as colchicine and
democolcine. The genus name is named after Colchis which existed around
the Black Sea Coast.
